Finally someone is moving forward!
Czech international Jakub Jankto (27) came out as homosexual in an emotional message on social media.
In a video, the midfielder from Spanish first division club Getafe (currently on loan to Sparta Prague) announces his coming out.
“Hello, I’m Jakub Jankto,” the 45-time national player starts the emotional video and continues: “Like everyone else, I have my strengths. i have my weaknesses I have a family. i have my friends I have a job that I have been doing as best I can for years, with seriousness, professionalism and passion.”
Then Jankto announces his homosexuality: “Like everyone else, I want to live my life in freedom. Without fears. Without prejudices. Without violence. BUT with love. I’m gay and I don’t want to hide anymore.”
Great words from the national player! Because so far, few footballers have publicly admitted to their homosexuality in their active careers, professionals like ex-Stuttgart Thomas Hitzlsperger (40) came out after their careers ended.
In 1990, ex-English striker Justin Fashanu was the first known case to come out publicly, but he committed suicide in 1998 at the age of just 37 for not accepting his homosexuality.
Two years ago, Australian midfielder Josh Cavallo (23, Adelaide United) became the first active player to come out. “I’m a footballer and I’m gay,” the then 21-year-old announced on social media.
Jankto is now the first active footballer in Europe’s top leagues.
The Czech moved from his youth club Slavia Prague to Udinese Calcio in Italy at the age of 18 before moving to Sampdoria Genoa for a fee of €14.5m. In 2021 he moved to Getafe FC in La Liga.
The midfield star has been back on loan in his native Sparta Prague since this season. Jankto played with the Czech national team at the 2020 European Championship, but was eliminated after the group stage.
