After the fuss about interview statements by Manuel Neuer, former Bayern professional Dietmar Hamann does not expect to return as captain. At another ex-club he asks himself exciting questions.

Former national soccer player Dietmar Hamann does not expect Manuel Neuer to return as captain of FC Bayern Munich.

“I can hardly imagine that. I’m also not sure if he’ll come back and reach his old level. If Yann Sommer isn’t guilty of anything in the second half of the season, he’ll start the new season as number one,” Hamann said in an interview with the “Abendzeitung”. “Neuer has to get fit and healthy first. Only if he is better than Sommer then does he still have a chance of getting his old position back.”

Neuer is out for a long time due to a broken lower leg, as number 1 Munich had signed Yann Sommer. Most recently, Neuer had eloquently criticized the separation of FC Bayern from goalkeeping coach Toni Tapalovic via an interview, causing a huge stir around the club. Coach Julian Nagelsmann avoided the question of the keeper’s future as captain.

Ex-Bayern professional Hamann does not expect Alexander Nübel to return for the Munich goal. “I can’t imagine that Nübel will wear the Bayern jersey again. Too much has happened for that. Even if Bayern told him that he would be on an equal footing with the other goalkeepers Sommer and possibly Neuer from the summer, Nübel would probably don’t do that. He wants to have the guarantee of being number one,” said Hamann. Munich signed Nübel in the summer of 2021. The 26-year-old has a contract until June 30, 2025 and is on loan at AS Monaco until the end of the season.
