Elena Fanchini she’s dead. The former Italian skier, who was 37 years old and had been ill for some time, died in her home in Solato, in the province of Brescia. In her career she was the world silver in downhill in 2005, she had also won two races in the World Cup. Recently there was talk of her when Sofia Goggia, who had won the downhill in Cortina, had dedicated his success to her. And it was precisely in her that Elena had linked the most beautiful pages of her career to her descent. She had won in Lake Louise in 2005 and had been able to repeat herself after ten years in Cortina D’Ampezzo but above all, in the world championship event in Santa Caterina Valfurva, at not even 20 years old, she had been preceded only by the Slovenian champion Janica Kostelic. She is the sister of former national teams Nadia and Sabrina, she took part in six editions of the World Cup and three Olympics.

His announcement of having to give up the The Olympics in PyeongChang in 2018 to cure himself of a cancer. The following year she was about to return, but a serious injury in training blocked her way. She broke her fibula, in a video she had announced in tears her willingness to say goodbye to skiing, but then she had changed her mind, she had prevailed the desire to go back to fighting on the track too. She didn’t make it and in April three years ago she announced her retirement together with her sister Nadia, with the latter having become Alessandro’s mother a few months earlier, and Elena determined to look to the future without competitions, but not far from his beloved snow: the last start from the starting gate was the super-G of the World Cup in Val-d’Isère in December 2017.

The relapse to the disease last August

The fight he seemed to have won was against the disease. She had recovered but last August she had discovered a recurrence which unfortunately proved fatal on a special day for blue skiing, after Marta Bassino’s world gold in the Super-G followed by gold in the Brignone super-combined.
