Helmut “Sonny” Sonneberg, Holocaust survivor and longtime Eintracht Frankfurt fan, has passed away. He was 91 years old.
Long-time Eintracht fan Helmut “Sonny” Sonneberg is dead. As the Eintracht Museum announced late Friday evening, he died at the age of 91. Sonneberg, whose parents were Jewish, was deported to Theresienstadt at the age of 13, where he survived the Nazi regime.
The Frankfurter Sonneberg only made his own life story public in 2018 as part of a teacher training course in the Eintracht Museum, and only after this event in schools, at clubs or at social events as a contemporary witness told in detail about his suffering under the Nazis.
He was a fan of Eintracht Frankfurt throughout his life and celebrated the German championship with the Hessians in 1959 in the Berlin Olympic Stadium. After a joint trip to Theresienstadt, he was made a lifelong Eintracht member in 2019.
