With a lot of luck, Nuremberg has reached the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup. The Franconians saved themselves against Düsseldorf only in injury time in extra time. Fortuna missed the best chances and was unlucky that an opponent’s missed shot was repeated in the penalty shoot-out.

“That was just luck too,” admitted Nuremberg coach Markus Weinzierl, with a view to what might have been the crucial scene in the DFB Cup round of 16. His player Taylan Duman had missed his attempt in a penalty shoot-out against ex-club from Düsseldorf. Fortuna’s goalkeeper parried the attempt and gave his team an advantage. To Weinzierl’s delight, however, this only lasted for a short time.

Referee Matthias Jöllenbeck had the attempt repeated because Florian Kastenmeier allegedly moved off the line too early – a highly controversial decision. In any case, Duman used his second chance and, like his teammates, scored in goal, while Jona Niemiec failed on the other end to Peter Vindahl. After the thrilling penalty thriller, Nuremberg were the only second division team to reach the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup and, in addition to the good performance bonus of around 1.7 million euros, they can hope for an attractive draw.

Hendrix misses the decision

In front of 25,216 spectators in the Max Morlock Stadium, Dawid Kownacki gave the visitors the lead in the 33rd minute with a fine header. The 25-year-old Pole failed to make it 2-0 twice after the break when he was denied by Vindahl (60th/69th). That took revenge: In the added time of the regular season, Duman equalized on his comeback after a four-month injury break with a remarkable shot from 15 meters (90 + 3). “We had so many good chances. And then something like that comes our way in the 93rd minute. It’s our own fault. But everything that could have gone against us went against us,” complained Düsseldorf defender Christoph Klarer.

In extra time, substitute Jorrit Hendrix was twice unlucky in Düsseldorf. First FCN professional Florian Flick was able to clear his shot on the goal line (92nd). Then Hendrix shot a free kick against the crossbar (105th). Flick finally saw the red card (120+1) after an emergency brake against Niemiec, with which he prevented another big chance for Düsseldorf to score the winning goal.

“We were the better team for a long time, but we have to blame ourselves for not making it 2-0,” summarized Fortuna’s defense chief André Hoffmann: “We had three, four, maybe five clear chances.” Nuremberg, on the other hand, celebrated redemption for the derby bankruptcy against Fürth at the weekend and is looking forward to the next round. The quarter-finals will be drawn on February 19 from 5:10 p.m. in the “ZDF-Sportreportage”.
