Deadly shooting on Michigan University campus

Police were searching for an assailant Monday night after a shooting on the campus of Michigan State University. At least three people were killed and five were taken to hospital, according to an initial report.

Another deadly shooting in the United States. An assailant opened fire Monday evening (Feb. 13) on the Michigan State University campus, killing at least three people and injuring five, local police said, saying law enforcement was searching the scene in search of the suspect, who would have acted alone.

While few details were immediately released, University Police official Chris Rozman said shots were fired at two separate buildings.

Called to intervene following the shots, the police found victims in the two places, added Chris Rozman during a televised press briefing organized at the end of the evening, approximately three hours after the incident. He confirmed that at least five people had been taken to hospital, some of them in critical condition. University police later announced on Twitter that at least three people had been killed.

Police have released photos of the suspect, a short black man wearing a denim jacket, red shoes and a baseball cap.

“We currently have hundreds of police and law enforcement officials – state, local and federal – on campus working in a coordinated effort to provide campus security and identify and apprehend the suspect,” claimed Chris Rozman.

Police quickly arrived on the scene and ordered students and campus staff to self-isolate. The university suspended all activity for 48 hours.

“Tonight let’s wrap our arms around the Spartan community,” Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer tweeted, alluding to the university’s logo, a Greek warrior helmet.

The United States pays a very heavy price for the spread of firearms in its territory and the ease with which Americans have access to them. The country has more individual weapons than inhabitants: one in three adults owns at least one weapon and nearly one in two adults lives in a home where there is a weapon. The consequence of this proliferation is the very high rate of firearm deaths in the United States, unmatched by that of other developed countries.
