Dallas executive vice president Stephen Jones has faith his quarterback has the tools to win the championship

INDIANAPOLIS — The 2023 season will mark the eighth Dak Prescott as starting quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys and despite only winning two playoff games, executive vice president Stephen Jones still trust what Prescott can take the franchise to its first Super Bowl since 1995.

I have all the faith in the world that we can win this with Dak“, declared Jones from the scouting combine in Indianapolis.

Because?

“Because we know him. We know what he does. His leadership skills are undeniable. An impeccable work ethic,” he said. Jones. “Other than not winning some key playoff games, he’s everything you want in a quarterback. Since the day he walked in the door, he’s won a lot of games. We just have to get over the bump.”

With head coach Mike McCarthy taking over the offensive playcalling role in 2023, the Cowboys they think it will be of great help to Prescottwho tied for the most interceptions thrown in the NFL with 15 last season despite missing five games with a broken thumb on his right hand, gets over the rough patch.

“Obviously he’s the head coach of this team and he made a compelling case that making him the playcaller would help us,” he said. Jones. “I mean, that’s part of coaching, being better. He feels good about that. He’s had a lot of success calling plays. I think he’s been a great leader in that regard as far as having respect for Kellen and the offensive group that he works with. with Dak, that this was the best way to do it. Although they believe the same in many things, there are 15 or 20 percent in what they do not. And I think Mike just thinks they’ll do more things the way he wants to do them and we’ll be a better football team on offense.”

Jones believes that there will be a noticeable change in the offense, especially considering that the Cowboys they were basically in the same system from 2007 to 2022.

“I just think it’s some of the fundamentals, how do you block, how do you coordinate and combine the running game with the passing game, how is your running and passing game philosophically,” he said. Jones. “I think people will take notice. Now, we’ve been a good team on offense. That’s the scary part. But we just couldn’t make the plays when it came down to it in the playoffs.”

Prescott is scheduled to hit $49.2 million against the 2023 salary cap. He is signed through 2024. If the Cowboys restructure the contract Prescott this year they can create up to $22 million in cap space. With an extension, they could create even more space.

“We must have a plan to finally extend to Dak“, sentenced Jones.

Jones believes that the Cowboys they have a top-tier defense led by coordinator Dan Quinn, the pass-rusher Micah Parsonsthe cornerback Trevon Diggs and defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence. On offense, they have questions about either the salary cap or free agency to answer, with players like running backs Ezekiel Elliott y Tony Pollardel tackle Tyron Smith and the tight end Dalton Schultz.

“Offensively, we just have to have, maybe add a talented player,” he said. Jones. “Add some talent. Add a talented player and see if we can do it.”
