Let’s not fool ourselves: There are much more enjoyable tasks on the WTA tour than having to compete against Iga Swiatek. This is especially true for Cori Gauff, who has lost all five previous comparisons with the world number one. After all: After Gauff is also quite high up in the charts, the meetings with Swiatek mostly came about late in a tournament. What primarily means: The compensation for pain and suffering is significantly higher than for a lesson in round one.
Tomorrow it will be time again in Dubai. After Swiatek got through to the semifinals without a fight due to Karolina Pliskova’s withdrawal, Gauff followed up with a 6:2 and 7:5 against Madison Keys. After winning the first set, Gauff also went ahead with an early break in the second act, but Keys fought back. Only to give up her serve in the eleventh game.
Four players from the lower half of the tableau can still apply to win the 1000 event. First Barbora Krejcikova meets Aryna Sabalenka, then Jessica Pegula has to deal with Karolina Muchova.
