Clippers-Kings, 351 points in the second highest scoring game in NBA history

It had been 41 years since such a high number of points had been reached, which is only below the 370 reached in a Pistons-Denver Nuggets in 1983

The 2023 Sacramento Kings-Angeles Clippers is already NBA history. The 351 points added between the two teams after two overtimes, 175-176 in favor of the Clippers, have just made it the second highest-scoring game in the history of American basketball.

You have to go back to the 80s, specifically to the December 13, 1983, to find a madness and a scoring waste that exceeds those seen last night. Then a Detroit Pistons-Denver Nuggets finished 186-184 in favor of the Pistons after three overtimes, 370 total points.

As last night’s game was going, one more overtime would have broken this record as well. The match reached the end with a huge tie at 153, and ended the first overtime with a tie at 164.

A good part of the blame for what happened lies with the former Los Angeles Lakers Malik Monkwho despite the defeat managed for Sacramento with 45 points and 6 triples, while his teammate De’Aaron Fox he went up to 42 points and 12 assists.

On the part of the Clippers, a good part of the scoring work was from Kawhi Leonard, who added 44 points thanks to 16 of 22 shooting, and 6 of 9 on triples. It marks the fifth time in NBA history that at least three scorers have reached 40 points in a game, and the first since 2012.

The meeting marked the debut of Russell Westbrook with the Clippers, who completed a game with 17 points, five rebounds and 14 assists. After Friday’s results, the Clippers are fifth in the West (33-29) and the Kings third (34-25).

They were about to celebrate 41 years of, until last night, the second most scoring game in history. It was a San Antonio Spurs against the Milwaukee Bucks played on March 6, 1982, which ended 171-166 in favor of the Spurs, 337 points in total after three extensions, in a game of which the 50 points of George Gervin.

The 1983 Detroit Pistons-Denver Nuggets was the only time in history four players topped 40 points. for the nuggets Kiki Vandeweghe he made 51 and Alex English 47, while for the Pistons Isaiah Thomas added 47 and John Long 41.

The fault that these figures began to be reached in the 80s was that until October 1979 there were no triples. That fact gives even more merit to the fact that the Boston Celtis achieved 173 points in a game in 1959, and without overtime, defeating the Minneapolis Lakers who stayed at a modest 139.

Last morning’s game leaves Chicago-Atlanta on March 2, 2019, in fourth place in games with the most scores, which ended 161 to 168 in favor of the Bulls, 329 points in total.
