Borussia Dortmund also won their sixth competitive game this year. In the 2-0 (0-0) success in the Bundesliga at Werder Bremen, a joker was again decisive.

BVB demonstrated right from the start that they had something to make up against Werder. In the first leg, Dortmund had led 2-0 until just before the end, before Bremen quickly turned the tide and won the game 3-2. Borussia wanted to play again this time, Raphael Guerreiro (9th), who failed to hit Jiri Pavlenka, and Julian Ryerson (13th), whose shot went just wide of the target, but missed the early lead.

Moukoko back in the starting eleven – but quickly out again

Werder then played at eye level and had a good opportunity themselves. Mitchell Weiser got the shot after a corner kick, but BVB goalkeeper Gregor Kobel was able to fend off his volley effortlessly (24′).

Shortly thereafter, his coach Edin Terzic had to improvise and bring Sébastian Haller, who was to be given a break after his comeback weeks, into play. The reason for this was the injury to Youssoufa Moukoko, who had to leave the field injured after a hard challenge from Leonardo Bittencourt (29′). However, the change had no effect, only a shot on goal by Emre Can from 20 meters was still promising – in contrast to his artistic shot in the cup in Bochum (2: 1), his attempt was unsuccessful this time (39.)

Bynoe-Gittens comes and scores

The most dangerous action of the game at this point took place immediately after the restart. Marco Reus came to an end after a long ball and was unlucky that the ball caught on Pavlenka’s heel – 22 seconds had only been played in the second half at that moment. A little later, BVB ran out of luck again when Jude Bellingham was just a few centimeters short of scoring after a cross from Ryerson (52′).

But then, as so often in the second half of the season, there was a joker. Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, who had just come on as a substitute, hit the near corner with a powerful left-footed shot and gave Dortmund the lead (68′), paving the way for their sixth win in their sixth competitive game in 2023. It was the sixth wildcard goal during this series.

Brandt removes the last doubts

A player from the starting eleven should have decided the game a little later. Julian Brandt rounded Pavlanka, but shot so uncontrollably that the ball was saved on the line by Amos Pieper (77′).

However, the World Cup participant used his next opportunity. This time Brandt prevailed against Niklas Stark and shoved the ball into the far corner to make it 2-0 for Dortmund (85′). And unlike in the first half of the season, that was enough against Werder, BVB played the result easily over time and earned the win with another strong performance, remaining only three points behind leaders Bayern Munich.
