Bayern threaten negative record – Nagelsmann novelty in Wolfsburg?

When FC Bayern play VfL Wolfsburg at the end of the 19th matchday on Sunday evening, several series will be put to the test.

There are more pleasant trips away for him: Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann.

One thing is certain: the away trips to Wolfsburg have never really paid off for Julian Nagelsmann in his still young coaching career. Because the 35-year-old has never scored three points at VfL. He lost his first guest appearance in Lower Saxony in 2017 with Hoffenheim 1: 2, followed by five points. At no other club has Nagelsmann played so often without ever having won.

Bayern’s record against Wolfsburg actually speaks volumes: Of the last 27 meetings with the German record champions, the Wolves have won exactly one (matchday 18, 2014/15, 4-1 at home) with 23 defeats and three draws. The current Bundesliga seventh has been waiting for a win against Bayern for 15 games – Wolfsburg has never had such a winning streak against a club.

Bayern’s offensive, which got going again in the 4-0 win in Mainz, usually tastes like duels with VfL. In the last 29 games against Wolfsburg, Bayern have always hit the mark. Never before had FCB had such a series of goals against an opponent. Incidentally, the internal league record is 35 games with a goal against an opponent: Leverkusen managed that from 2003 to 2020 – against Wolfsburg.

New home power VfL – Bayern’s memories of 1975

Bayern and Wolfsburg have particularly good and particularly bad memories of matchday 31 in 2016/17 and matchday 25 in 2018/19. On April 29, 2017, Bayern Munich were crowned German champions for the fifth time in a row with a 6-0 win in Lower Saxony. On March 9, 2019, FCB won 6-0 at home against VfL – with Niko Kovac as Bayern coach . They are the highest defeats in the Bundesliga history of the wolves to date.

In addition to Nagelsmann’s record, there are also Wolfsburg encouragers. There’s the current home strength: Kovac’s team scored 13 out of a possible 15 points in the last five games in front of their home crowd, and VfL won all of the last three with a goal difference of 12:0.

And then there was Bayern’s poor start to the new calendar year – all three league games after the winter break only ended 1-1. The record champions recorded three 1-1 draws in a row only in 1978. If the table leaders also drew in the Volkswagen Arena for the fourth time in a row, Bayern would match a club record from the 1982/83 and 1994/95 seasons.

In addition, there is a risk of setting a negative club record: Bayern last had four winless Bundesliga appearances at the start of a new calendar year in 1975.
