Bassino wins Super-G ahead of Shiffrin

Ski Queen Mikaela Shiffrin won her first medal at the World Championships in Meribel. After the bitter disappointment in the combination, when she was on course for victory with three goals to go, the 27-year-old American won silver in the Super-G. World champion was Italy’s Marta Bassino, who was 0.11 seconds ahead of Shiffrin. Third place was shared by Austrian Cornelia Hütter and Kajsa Vickhoff Lie from Norway (+0.33). “You don’t even know how happy I am,” said Shiffrin on ZDF about her second place.

Defending champion and Olympic champion Lara Gut-Behrami (Switzerland/+0.37) and the equally favored Ragnhild Mowinckel (Norway/+0.36) had to admit defeat. For Shiffrin, who was eliminated in the combination shortly before the finish, it was the twelfth World Cup medal.

Kira Weidle missed out on the top 20 but was unlucky in her race. The 26-year-old from Starnberg drove over a stone in the first section of the route. “That went badly. When something like this happens at a World Cup, it’s really annoying. That’s why I always lost my skis. It felt like shit,” she said. But she shouldn’t “stay too long” with that now. Weidle is one of the contenders for a medal in the downhill on Saturday.

Weidle was 1.81 seconds behind Bassino, who won Italy’s second gold at the World Championships after Federica Brignone’s combination win. Things went a little better for Emma Aicher, the second German starter. But the 19-year-old, 1.15 seconds behind, didn’t make it into the top 15 either.
