The 28-year-old missed the Cubs’ spring training game against the San Francisco Giants on Saturday with left oblique pain, as well as club practice on Sunday before suffering a thorough examination.
Suzuki, who was on the WBC’s 2017 Japan Samurai roster, was a batsman at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics when the host country won the gold medal. The former Hiroshima Carp all-rounder was expected to be one of Japan captain Hideki Kuriyama’s key members next month.
Hanshin Tigers outfield player Koji Chikamoto is expected to replace him.
