BA is certainly giving the Cubs prospects more love, naming five in the organization’s total in the top 100. Going into the 2023 campaign, there will likely be a few more names added to these lists, as we’ve seen several sites mention the Cubs, several of whom just outside that top 100 just missed the cut. Let’s dive right into who Baseball America likes about the Cubs organization.
Good to see Brennen Davis still in the top 100 here. Although he’s dealt with past issues over the past year, the ceiling is still high for the former Cubs No. 1 prospect if he can stay healthy. It wasn’t until 2021 that Davis was promoted to Triple-A Iowa, recording a .268/.397/.536 with a 150 wRC+ and .268 ISO, albeit in a small 56 AB sample. Considering his potential five-tool ability, he still ranks as a 55 FV player, according to Fangraphs. It’s way too early to even consider closing the book on Davis here. However, 2023 will be a vital year for him in terms of production and health.

Another popular name that graced several top 100 lists this winter is Kevin Alcantara. In Myrtle Beach with the Pelicans, Alcantara landed a .273/.360/.451 line with 15 HR and 85 driven to go along with a 124 wRC+. As for the field, between time spent in CF and RF, he recorded a .0964 FPCT. Alcantara had a solid season with the bat, but his numbers were down from the Complex League between the Yankees and Cubs after the trade a year prior when he went down .345/.423/.588 in 119 ABS. Of course, adapting to high levels of pitching is a real thing. Let’s hope the 20-year-old outfielder continues to do so and continues to move up the Cub’s top prospect list.
