ATP: Denis Shapovalov lost to Michael Mmoh in three sets

Denis Shapovalov was shown the door in the round of 16 at Delrey Beach on Wednesday by American Michael Mmoh.

the 87e world racket got the better of the Canadian in three sets at 7-5, 3-6 and 6-3, in a match that lasted just over 2 hours 20 minutes.

Shapo started the encounter well, as he managed to build a 4-1 lead in the first set. His opponent, however, climbed the slope to surprise the 27e ATP ranking player and trailing with the set at 7-5.

Shapovalov grabbed the second set by saving two break points in the process. The two players fought a close duel during the final round and Mmoh’s opportunism made the difference. While his rival squandered three break chances, the American grabbed Shapovalov’s serve with his only break point.

The Canadian gave Mmoh a 5-3 lead with the help of an unforced error and he was unable to come back to score afterwards.

The Ontarian hit four aces and 30 winners, but also conceded four double faults and 30 unforced errors.

Mmoh will meet compatriot Mackenzie McDonald in the quarter-finals.
