Alimerka Oviedo values a replacement in the coaching position: throw out Trifón Poch and give the team to Guillermo Arenas

Alimerka Oviedo Baloncesto is thinking of taking a swing to try to straighten out a season in which almost nothing is going well. The blue team, in relegation places with five wins and fifteen losses, is now going through a particularly bad moment, especially in terms of results, with a win in its last eight games in the LEB Oro. The low scoring production that the team is having OCB in these last days is condemning a team that, however, competed well in their previous match, against Palencia, current champion of the Princess Cup, but which ended up falling again (56-67).

The decision that the club has practically made up its mind is to replace the current coach, the experienced Trifón Poch, with someone very special at the club, Guillermo Arenas (Oviedo, 1977), an Asturian coach who led the team for three seasons, the first of them was the one in which he achieved promotion to LEB Oro. Arenas was also the coach who coached Oviedo Baloncesto in the great debut they made in the second category of Spanish basketball, in which they reached the semifinals for promotion, of the that left them out of Palencia, which was then directed by Natxo Lezkano, later coach of the Asturian team and current Andorra coach. In that play-off there were moments such as the comeback against the Castilian team in the third game that did a lot to engage the Oviedo fans in basketball. If Poch’s dismissal is confirmed, Arenas will take the team immediately and lead the Blues in the difficult match they have on Saturday (8:00 pm) on the San Pablo Burgos field.

The man from Oviedo continued a third season at the OCB, a course in which the team failed to get into the promotion play-off but in which they did not suffer excessively to stay in the LEB Oro. Until now, that was his last experience in the Oviedo team, which changed course and hired Carles Marco the following season, with whom they would win the Princess Cup. After his time at Pumarín, Arenas went through several more projects and directed Peñas Huesca at LEB Oro. Last year he joined Ourense, in LEB Plata, achieving promotion to Gold, where he continued this campaign until the Galician club decided to do without his services. Ourense is precisely one of the rivals with which the Asturian team is going to play permanence and a field that they will have to visit in the final stretch of the season. Arenas already spent this season in Pumarín precisely with Ourense in a game that Trifón Poch’s men won at perhaps the best moment the Asturian team has gone through this season.

The one who could become the new coach of Alimerka Oviedo Baloncesto in the next few hours, Guillermo Arenas, was also a player for the Carbayón team in its early years, during its time in the Eba League, to later join the coaching staff, growing until reaching the first team and promoting the OCB to the LEB Oro after winning on the field of the Gran Canaria subsidiary. Now he has to try to rescue an OCB that is going through one of his most difficult moments, with the sole objective of maintaining the category.
