After his return to the big stage of tennis, Alexander Zverev really doesn’t want to be able to sustainably pick up speed. Positive signals – such as the recent two-set win over Soonwoo Kwon in Rotterdam – are always set against larger and smaller dampers. Like the defeat against local hero Tallon Griekspor. Also in Rotterdam.
That’s why the native of Hamburg is traveling to Doha with mixed feelings, where the next ATP event is on the program from Monday. Zverev is number four in the top-ranked ATP 250 tournament and consequently has a bye in round one. The Russian Andrey Rublev goes to work as number one in Doha.
Medvedev and Auger-Aliassime in the lower half
For Zverev, there could be an explosive duel in round two in Qatar, on paper Andy Murray would be the likely opponent there. The Scot has to start against the capricious Italian Lorenzo Sonego. Andrey Rublev, on the other hand, could of all people meet Tallon Griekspor, who last knocked Zverev out of the tournament in Rotterdam. The Russian would also be a possible semi-final opponent for Zverev, who would meet Botic van de Zandschulp in the quarter-finals according to the seeding list.
Number two in the well-attended ATP 250 event and thus on the lower half of the tableau is Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime. The youngster is placed in Alejandro Davidovich Fokina’s quarters, a possible opponent in the semifinals is Russian Daniil Medvedev, who is currently finding his way back in Rotterdam. The Russian could face Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut in the quarter-finals.
