When was the last time the Super Bowl champion missed out on the NFL playoffs?

The 2022 NFL season is drawing to a close and only two playoff spots remain on the line.

The Rams flopped a year after winning Super Bowl LVI and missed out on the playoffs, and 11 losses so far is the worst mark for a defending champion in the NFL, but who suffered the same fate before them?

The last team to win the Super Bowl and not advance to the postseason was the 2016 Denver Broncos.. In the 2015 campaign they won the 50th edition of Super Sunday and a year later they were left out after winning nine of the 16 regular season games.

The other champions without playoffs

Of the 56 Super Bowl winners, 16 failed to advance to the postseason in the subsequent season. After winning Super Bowls I and II, the Green Bay Packers were unable to reach the Playoffs in 1968 as they posted a 6-7-1 record. The Kansas City Chiefs won Super Bowl IV at the hands of Len Dawson, but a year later they were eliminated in the regular season with a 7-5-2 record.

The decade of the 1970s in the NFL belonged to los Pittsburgh Steelers because they won four Super Bowls. After the last championship, that of the XIV edition, they stayed out of the playoffs despite having more wins than losses (9-7).

The winners of the XV and XVI editions of the Super Bowl, the Oakland Raiders (7-9) and the San Francisco 49ers (3-6), did not advance to the postseason after being named the best teams in the NFL. The case of the NY Giants (6-9) and the Washington Redskins (7-9), winners of Super Bowls XXI and XXII, was similar since they did not play in the playoffs.

The Giants won the XXV edition, but went 8-8 the following year. The Broncos suffered the retirement of John Elway since a season after winning Super Bowl XXXIII and saying goodbye at the top, the franchise finished 6-10.

In the new millennium, the New England Patriots missed the postseason after winning Super Bowl XXXVI and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, winners of Super Bowl XXXVII, suffered the same fate.

The Steelers won their fifth and sixth Vince Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl XL and XLIII. In the immediate seasons they were out of the postseason with marks of 8-8 and 9-7, respectively.

NY Giants and Baltimore Ravens won the XLVI and XLVII editions, but both franchises missed out on the playoffs a year later.
