United Cup: Poland win, Italy in semifinal – Tennis

Poland is the second semi-finalist of the United Cup. The Azzurri, defeated 3-2 in the match between the group winners in Brisbane (City Final), were however revived thanks to the best win-loss difference and for a place in the final of the new team tournament that opened the 2023 season will face Greece, beating Croatia 3-2, while Poland will meet the United States. At the ‘Queensland Tennis Centre’ Italy, winners of Group E (where they overcame Brazil and Norway), took the match against Poland to the decisive mixed doubles. But Camilla Rosatello and Lorenzo Musetti succumbed 6-1, 6-2 to world number 1 Iga Swiatek, paired with Hubert Hurkacz. However, the Azzurri maintain a win-loss balance, between the group and the City Final, better than that of Great Britain, defeated by the United States. The day began with the clear success (6-1, 6-1) of Lorenzo Musetti on Daniel Michalski (n.280 in the ATP ranking). But Poland immediately made it 1-1 when Martina Trevisan (n.27) gave in 6-2, 6-4 to the very strong Swiatek. Italy again in the lead thanks to Matteo Berrettini (n.16), who defeated Hubert Hurkacz (n.10) in three sets (6-4, 3-6, 6-3). In an exciting head-to-head, in the fourth singles Lucia Bronzetti, WTA n.54, was beaten 6-1, 6-2 by Magda Linette (n.48), who put Poland back in the running. Berrettini’s feelings were positive: “I’m happy with this victory and for my team – said the Roman – The level of play was very high. I’m really satisfied even if a little tired. Service and forehand worked well: I heard my racket hit with power”. Musetti, singles player for the first blue point, was also happy: “Today I was moving very, very fast with my feet and I think this is a fundamental aspect for my game. I was in focus, so I was able to manage the match in a positive way”.
