Ukraine ambassador calls for papa Djokovic to be expelled

The 62-year-old has met with severe criticism. “He should have his accreditation withdrawn,” Vasyl Myroshnychenko, Ukraine’s ambassador to Australia, told the AFP news agency. In addition, Novak Djokovic – the current world number 5 – should publicly confess against the war and comment on his father’s behavior.

The Serbian portal “Kurir” writes that the 21-time Grand Slam winner had to sit down with those responsible for the tournament the day after. So they pointed out to him that he was responsible for how the people in his box behaved. That’s why the Serbs got a warning.

The 35-year-old did not comment on the subject himself, but his father did. “I had no intention of causing such headlines or shocks,” Srdjan Djokovic said in a statement. He just wanted to see his son play and “not get involved in this matter”: “My family and I have experienced war and we just want peace.”

On Friday Novak Djokovic will play against the American Tommy Paul for his tenth final in Melbourne. With dad Srdjan in the box? No, because he explains: “So that the semifinals are not disturbed either for my son or for the other player, I decided not to be there.” (che)
