January 17, 2023 – Ajax says goodbye to Lucas Ocampos immediately. The Argentinian came to the Johan Cruijff Arena as a mercenary last summer after a real transfer soap, but returns to his employer Seville after a very disappointing six months.
Ajax would have wanted to take over Ocampos from the Spaniards for an amount of 20 million euros, but the Supervisory Board of the Amsterdam club single-handedly put a stop to that. That was a good thing in retrospect, because Ocampos would eventually only play 114 minutes spread over six games for Alfred Schreuder’s team.

A purchase option worth reportedly 16 million euros was included in the rental contract with Seville, but Ajax obviously does not use it. Now that the unhappy marriage between Ajax and Ocampos has come to an early end VIjournalist Bart Frouws with a striking calculation. If the rental sum of reportedly 9 million euros (consisting of a rental amount plus the salary that Ajax paid for) is divided by the meager number of times Ocampos was at the ball on behalf of the club, then he has paid Ajax more than 75 thousand euros per ball contact.
Incidentally, Ocampos enters Seville again in a troubled situation. The sub-topper, who has seized the Europa League several times in recent years, is involved in a tough relegation battle this season. For the time being, the team is in penultimate (nineteenth) place in La Liga, with only fifteen points from the first seventeen matches.
