These are the key dates to follow this year

After a 2022 in which there was a World Cup and Olympic Games (Winter), the new year 2023 brings another soccer World Cup, but for women. And several sports events that must be marked on the calendar in a year with special attention to team sports: there are World Cups in handball and basketball, for example.

In chronological order, the first major event that does not repeat itself annually will be the handball world cup. From January 11 to 29, the 32 best countries in this sport seek the international title. Spain, winner ten years ago, was third in the last edition of a tournament that is held every two years.

As usual, the first month of the year is also the time for the first Grand Slam of the tennis season to be played (Australian Open) and the Rally Dakarwhich officially began on December 31 and runs in Saudi Arabia, where the Spanish Super Cup of soccer will be played in the middle of the month.

For February we will have a novelty in the football calendar: the Club World Cup, which will be played by Real Madrid in Morocco. There will be a new edition of the Six Nations Rugby Tournament. The NFL, as is tradition, will have its Super Bowl this month, in this case in Arizona, and the NBA the All Star in Salt Lake City. There will also be Copa del Rey basketball in Badalona.

In April there will be several of the big cycling spring classic races in addition to a new edition of the Augusta Golf Masters. In May the Giro d’Italia will arrive, the first major cycling round of the season, the final of the Copa del Rey soccer will be played in Seville as well as the Europa League, the second European soccer competition, which will be held in Budapest. The FEuroleague Basketball Final Four will take place in Kaunas from May 19 to 21. And of course Roland Garros will be held, although it really ends in June.

In that month, the sixth of the year, in addition to saying the Grand Slam in Paris, the entire football season will be decided: there is the final of LaLiga and the final of the Champions League, which this year is being held in Istanbul. Summer will be for the classic sports events, to which this year (in August) there will be a Women’s Soccer World Cup. As is tradition, there will be the Tour de France (which will start in this edition in Bilbao), Wimbledon, the Swimming World Cup in Japan and another World Cup, athletics, in this case in Budapest. The big date of these months will beto the basketball world cup, to play in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia between August 25 and September 10. Spain defends the title achieved in 2019.
