the winner’s bonus increased by 60% in the middle of the tournament!

On this Friday which marks the kick-off of the quarter-finals of CHAN 2022, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) brought good news to the 18 participating teams. Finally especially to the 8 teams that are still in the running! In a press release, the governing body of African football announces that the financial allocations of the tournament have been increased in an XXL way.

The selection that will win the competition and succeed Morocco on February 4 will thus pocket 2 million dollars! This is an increase of 60% compared to the bonus received in 2021 by the Atlas Lions ($ 1.25 million). For comparison, Senegal, winner of the CAN last year, received $ 5 million for his coronation.

More generally, CHAN’s total financial allocation goes from €5.45 million to €7.9 million. “The decision, which was confirmed by CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe, is in line with CAF’s strategy to increase the commercial value of African competitions“, explained the authority.

This increase is obviously good news. For more fairness, however, it would have been preferable for this decision to be announced before the start of the competition and not when half of the tournament has already taken place with 10 selections already eliminated…
