Stone to the Ancients by Joel Embiid: “Basketball Isn’t Played Like The 90s Anymore”

Since the beginning of the 2000s, NBA basketball has undergone a major change process. Compared to previous years, while the importance of tall players who can take the ball in a low post and attack with their backs decreased, the tall players with different characteristics such as passer, 3-pointer threat and attacking the rim came to the fore.

Joel Embiid, one of the most popular tall players in the world with the Philadelphia 76ers jersey, made remarkable statements about this change process.

Embiid, who said that basketball is played differently now than in the 90s, made a reference to some old greats that he did not name:

“In our first meeting after taking over the team, coach Doc Rivers asked me where on the court I liked playing the ball the most. I used to love to get the ball in the low post and attack backwards, but when I do that, it’s much easier for the opposing defense to bring help.

For this reason, I try to play differently now, but some old bigs keep criticizing me for changing my playing style. I think it’s very funny, it’s impossible to win now by constantly attacking from the low post. We have long left the 90s behind, now the modern big guys need to use their game intelligence to win games for their teams.”

Joel Embiid, who has played a total of 34 games in the NBA this season, is struggling with impressive averages of 33.6 points, 9.8 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game.
