Jannik Sinner has not played a match on the ATP tour for over two months. On Tuesday morning it was that time again for the young Sextner: At the ATP 250 tournament in Adelaide, Sinner defeated the British Kyle Edmund in two sets 6: 3, 6: 2.

On hard court, Sinner made life difficult for his British counterpart, who had previously ranked 14th in the ATP ranking but is now fighting back from some persistent knee injuries. When the score was 2:1, he took the first break from Edmund, which should also be enough to win the first set. As a result, both brought through their service game rock-solid and Sinner converted his first set ball confidently.

The second set was very similar to the first: again both played on their own service without any major blunders. Only in the middle of the sentence – when the score was 2: 2 – did Sinner make the break and the preliminary decision. Sinner immediately made the next break against the broken Edmund to make it 5: 2, then played the game to the end in a routine manner and after a little more than an hour of play secured a place in the next round.

Also in doubles with Sonego

In the round of 16, Sinner now meets the Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis (ATP 93rd). Before that, however, Sextner had to play doubles. With his Italian compatriot Lorenzo Sonego, they knocked out the Australians James Duckworth and Alexei Popyrin in straight sets 6: 4, 6: 3 on Tuesday morning. Curious: Sonego had to give up his singles match against Daniil Medvedev during the night from Monday to Tuesday due to muscular problems, but he bit his teeth in doubles with Sinner a few hours later.
