Shiffrin celebrated an emphatic World Cup giant slalom victory in Slovenia to reach 82 career wins, the same as the retired Vonn. The absolute record holder, the legendary Swede Ingemar Stenmark, has four more victories.

“I had to drive well and I did it. It was a tough battle, but the conditions were great. I listened to the coach and drove aggressively,” said Shifrina on Eurosport’s live broadcast.

He beat runner-up Federico Brignoni of Italy by 0.77 seconds, while Switzerland’s Lara Gutta-Behrami was two tenths of a second behind. Slovakian Petra Vlhova remained one tenth of a second behind the first three.

Shifrin won her first victory on December 20, 2012, at the age of 17, winning the slalom in Ore, Sweden. During her career, she has won 51 slalom competitions, 17 giant slaloms, five super giants and five parallel distances, as well as three downhill and one Alpine combined.

Already on Tuesday, Shifrina can become the most titled alpine skier of all time in the women’s competition and also get closer to the record holder Stenmark.
