“It is warm here, unlike in Belgium,” laughs Evenepoel, who will make his season debut in San Juan in the race he won in 2020. “I’m happy to be back here after almost three years. What are my expectations? I don’t know, it’s the first race of the year. There are many opportunities for sprinters, so we are here with the idea of winning with Fabio (Jakobsen, ed.). In the ride to the Colorado I will do my best, but I have no idea what it will give.”

The big goal for the world champion is in May, with the Tour of Italy. “That’s why I’m here too,” he says. “It is the first step in that direction. I am now especially happy that I can race here again in this beautiful country. The people here are also very friendly and they are real fans. Will I win here as world champion? We’ll see. There is only one real chance for the classification, the fifth stage. The rest will be mainly for sprinters, so I hope to do well in that mountain stage.”
