Ostapenko beats US star Goff to reach Australian Open quarterfinals

Ostapenko, who is currently ranked 17th in the world, defeated the young American tennis star Goff (WTA) 7-5, 6-3.

So far, they have competed once – in 2019 in the final of the Linz tournament, where Goff won in three sets and won her first WTA title in her career.

Goff was on an eight-match winning streak as he won the season-opening WTA 250 in Auckland for his third career title before heading to Melbourne.

In the quarterfinals of the “Australian Open”, Ostapenko will compete with Jelena Rybakina from Kazakhstan (WTA 25th), who unexpectedly defeated the world leader Iga Świontek from Poland in the round of 16.

The 23-year-old Rybakina triumphed at the Wimbledon championship last year, winning her first “Grand Slam” singles title.

Ostapenko has met Rybakina twice and won both duels – in 2021 in Eastbourne (semi-finals) and in 2019 in Linz (quarter-finals).

Ostapenko has reached the quarterfinals of the “Grand Slam” series for the third time in her career. In 2017, she sensationally triumphed at the French Open, but a year later the Latvian tennis player reached the semifinals of the Wimbledon championship.

Ostapenko earned a cash prize of 555,250 Australian dollars (approximately 355.5 thousand euros) and 430 rating points for entering the singles quarterfinals of the Australian Open.

Current estimates show that Ostapenko will rise to 11th place in the world ranking after the Australian Open. She could also return to the top ten if she continues her winning streak in Melbourne. Her record is the 5th position in the WTA ranking.
