No Eupen – Racing Genk canceled due to snowfall: “Safety could not be guaranteed” | Jupiler Pro League 2022/2023

The snowy weather is not without consequences.

The opener of matchday 22 between Eupen and Racing Genk is cancelled. It has snowed heavily in the East Cantons in recent hours, so there were immediate concerns about the possibility to play.

Eupen reportedly did everything he could to allow the match to take place and would normally start clearing snow at 5 p.m., but before that target hour the report came that the match was cancelled.

“In total, up to 25 centimeters of snow is expected in the area before the race,” said a statement from Racing Genk. “That makes the field unplayable. The roads in and around Eupen are also very difficult to drive on.”

The club previously announced that Jong Genk’s match against Jong Standard in 1B has been cancelled. The field of Lommel, where the match was to take place, has been declared unplayable by the referee.

Standard – Club YLA has been canceled for the women.

“This is the only right decision,” said Head of Football Dimitri de Condé. “Both for our players and for the nearly 800 supporters who would head to Eupen, safety could not be guaranteed. As a club we support this decision 100%.”

In consultation with the local authorities and the rights holder, the Pro League will set a new date as soon as possible to postpone the match.
