Jorge Nicola, columnist for Superesportes, talks about the investor negotiating with Atltico to acquire SAF

It’s only a matter of time before Atltico publicly confirms that the investor negotiating the purchase of SAF Peter Grieve, owner of The Football CO. In 2021, the American banker had already tried to close with Botafogo, but made a bad impression and ended up discarded. The club from Rio opted for John Textor.

“Right on the first page of Peter’s proposal, there was a paragraph that made the intention of seeking money on the market to invest in the club very clear”, explains one of those involved in Botafogo’s dealings with Football CO on that occasion.

“It was clear to everyone at Botafogo that he didn’t have the money and would try to capture it. And the idea was never to sell SAF to someone who needed other people’s money to run the club”, adds the source.

The first information related to Galo states that the former employee of Goldman Sachs, a multinational financial group based in New York, intends to set up a fund of US$ 1 billion or R$ 5.2 billion to manage soccer clubs.

In addition to Atlético, there are negotiations with a team from the first division of the English Championship.

Grieve previously managed a club in Zimbabwe without much success. The experience in Africa began in 2009 and ended in 2017. Bantu Rovers even competed in the elite of the national championship for four seasons, but its best position was no more than ninth place.
The American also owned Europa Point, in Gibraltar, from 2017 to 2019. In the three seasons, Europa Point only played the first division in the last year, when it finished the championship in 10th – with only 12 clubs.

It is worth remembering that Atltico intends to sell only 51% of its SAF shares to the owner of Football CO. Neither Arena MRV nor Cidade do Galo are expected to be part of the negotiations.
