NFL: Taylor Heinicke leaving, the end for Carson Wentz with the Washington Commanders

The Commanders de Washington will offer the next start to the quarterback Taylor Heinicke Sunday in their last game of the regular schedule against the dallas cowboys.

This decision announces for all practical purposes the end of the association between the quarter Carson Wentz and the Commanders, advances the ESPN network. Rookie quarterback Sam Howell is expected to play late in the game.

Last week, the Commanders offered the start to Wentz in hopes of reviving their offense. However, this did not have the desired effect, while the Browns de Cleveland defeated the Commanders 24-10. The latter amassed only 260 yards, their third lowest total of the season. Wentz generated only 124 yards and suffered three interceptions in the loss that formalized the exclusion of the Commanders (7-8-1) from the playoffs.

The Cowboys can win the NFC East Division title if they win against the Commanders and the Philadelphia Eagles lose their last game.

Wentz will therefore be inactive in what will almost certainly be his last game with Washington. There are still two years to go on his contract, the salary of which is not guaranteed.

Washington gave up two third-round picks to the Colts d’Indianapolis and traded second-round picks with them last spring to acquire the services of Wentz. The Commanders also absorbed $28 million from their payroll.

Wentz threw a total of seven touchdown passes in Washington’s first two games but struggled afterward, throwing just four touchdown passes in his next five starts. The Commanders scored a total of 55 points in those first two games, but only 57 in the next five.

Heinicke started nine games after Wentz fractured his right ring finger on Oct. 13. Washington went 5-3-1 in those games. Over the past two seasons, Washington has gone 12-11-1 with Heinicke starting and 2-7 with another quarterback in charge.

Howell is Washington’s only contracted quarterback on the roster for 2023.
