In 2022, a total of 20,209 male football players have made the switch to a new club. That is not only an increase of 11.6% compared to 2021, but also a record.
In professional women’s football, 1,555 international transfers took place, representing an increase of 19.3%.
The football clubs spent a total of about six billion euros last year. That is 33.5% more than was spent in 2021, but it is not a record. That was established in 2019, when the clubs together recorded around 6.75 billion euros in transfer expenses.
The 10 most expensive transfers of the past year accounted for 12.5% of the total amount spent.
The English clubs in particular played an important role in the transfer market in 2022. For example, last year they passed the 2 billion euro mark in transfer expenses for the first time. The French clubs, on the other hand, managed to feed their bank accounts the most with a profit of 680 million euros.
