MLB: Dodgers find their shortstop by acquiring Miguel Rojas

MIAMI — The Miami Marlins have traded shortstop Miguel Rojas to his first roster, the Los Angeles Dodgers.

In return, the Marlins get their hands on infield prospect Jacob Amaya, ranked the Dodgers’ 15th prospect by MLB.com.

The Dodgers needed a shortstop after Trea Turner, who started all but two games at that position in 2022, left for the Philadelphia Phillies. The free agent accepted US$300 million for 11 seasons.

This void will obviously be filled by Rojas, who will spend the last year of his two-year, $10 million contract before also benefiting from autonomy, unless the Dodgers submit him a contract extension.

Rojas was the Marlins’ longest-serving player in Florida, having been with the club since 2015. He played 870 games in eight years with the Marlins. He was the undisputed leader of this locker room.

While he hit just .236 last season, his lowest average since his 85 games with the Dodgers (.181) in 2014, his defensive play has been impeccable, committing only seven errors in 531 opportunities to be the Golden Glove finalist at shortstop in the National.

The baseball player, who turns 34 in February, has posted career averages of .260/.314/.358 with 139 doubles and 39 homers. He produced 269 points in addition to scoring 309.

The 24-year-old Amaya was the Dodgers’ 11th-round pick in 2018. He’s spent the past five seasons on their network, averaging .256 in 463 games. He played for the first time at the AAA level last season.
