La Gazzetta dello Sport sees Charles De Ketelaere as the most disappointing transfer from AC Milan: “His body language is worrying”

The Italian sports newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport sheds light on AC Milan’s summer purchases and concludes that the returns are insufficient. Red Devil Charles De Ketelaere has the dubious honor of being the most disappointing acquisition to be labeled. Fortunately, CDK has his young age (21) and long-term contract (five years) with him, but Milan had already expected more from the man who came over from Club Brugge for about 32 million euros.

“Charles De Ketelaere is inevitably the most disappointing addition to the summer mercato,” said La Gazzetta dello Sport. “He started well (only one goal was missing on his debut), but gradually he sank mentally. In the first match of the new year against Salernitana, he seemed to be on the right track with two goal attempts during his substitute appearance, but against AS Roma (De Ketelaere came in for five minutes, ed.) the problems reappeared. His body language in particular is worrisome: CDK is mentally fragile, anything but a booster and in many matches he leaves it after the ball on the demands. Pioli gave him a lot of confidence in the beginning, but recently he has become a substitute. His last game as a starting player in Serie A was on October 1, 2022 against Empoli. He is only at the beginning of his career at AC Milan, but the club undoubtedly expected more from him.”

Divock Origi is also not a success yet, but La Gazzetta calls for extenuating circumstances: he came as a transfer-free player (although he has a wage of 4 million euros), struggled with injuries, was taken in anyway as second choice behind Olivier Giroud and got few playing minutes. “In training he shows that he is a strong player, but with no acquisition is the gap between his potential and his performance so great. He played ten times in Serie A, disappointed many times and only scored once, but coach Pioli must give him more minutes as soon as possible so that he can grow.”
