Justin Turner reveals who Red Sox fans have to thank for his Boston signing

Red Sox newcomer Justin Turner says former Dodgers teammate Kiké Hernández played a big role in his decision to sign with Boston as a free agent.

Kiké Hernández and Justin Turner spent six years together in Los Angeles as Dodgers teammates.

That relationship just helped the Red Sox sign their new veteran DH.

Turner finalized his one-year contract with Boston on Friday. During his introductory press conference, he pointed out that Hernández was part of the reason he chose the Red Sox.

Justin Turner says Kiké Hernández was “central” to Red Sox recruiting.

Hernández provided even more evidence of their bond when he tweeted a celebration of Turner’s signing, telling Dodgers fans that Turner is “in good hands.”

He later responded to the tweet about his involvement in recruiting Turner with all the love for his former Dodgers and now Red Sox teammate.

“Only one teammate has had a greater impact in my career than this man! “. Hernández wrote, “His background and career is one of my biggest inspirations! “.

The Red Sox made this link the subject of another tweet as well.

Turner spent much of the 2022 season serving as DH and third base for the Dodgers. However, he said he expects to spend much more time as the former than the latter during his time in Boston. Now that the Red Sox have extended Rafael Devers to a new 11-year contract, the need for Turner at third base is minimal.

At 38, it makes sense that Turner would move to full-time defense. He could also play first base if necessary.

There will be more familiar faces in Boston than just Hernández for Turner. He will also reunite with his former LA teammates Kenley Jansen and Alex Verdugo.
