Stuttgart.Five judoka from TSV Abensberg grabbed national title honors at the German individual championships. Raffaela Igl made it onto the podium with third place in the weight class up to 78 kilograms.

Ben Howard from TSV Abensberg fought his way up to fifth place in the weight class up to 60 kilograms. With two wins, Howard stormed into the semifinals, but was beaten by Maximilian Heyder (JC Naisa). In the fight for bronze, Howard was defeated by Maximilian Standke. In the final, Moritz Plafky (JC Hennef) took revenge for last year’s defeat against Heyder. In the class up to 73 kg, Kevin Abeltshauser was looking for a successful start to the new competition year. In his view, last year’s bronze medalist was beaten by his colleague Michel Adam from the Olympic training center in Munich after “two clear victories” in the pool final. “The defeat against the very strong judoka is okay,” said Abeltshauser. “A carelessness” caused the loss to Maximilian Murawski in the consolation round – and the 20-year-old had to settle for ninth place. Nikolas Menzl (TSV Wacker Neutraubling), Abeltshauser’s teammate at Judo Bundesliga team TSV Abensberg, also finished the tournament in ninth place. Alexander Gabler defended his title.

Franziska Neubauer (up to 63 kg) and Michael Weber (up to 90 kg, both TSV Abensberg) failed in the consolation round. After the semi-final defeat against world champion Anna-Maria Wagner, Raffaela Igl made it onto the bronze podium with Ippon against Eva Ronja Buddenkotte. TSV trainer Radu Ivan received a special honour: he was named trainer of the year 2022 in the top-class sport category at the national title fights.
