The Swiss striker Michael Frey is second choice at Antwerp and therefore wants to leave in the winter mercato. To Schalke 04? “I’m not allowed to say anything about it, but at Schalke we can’t pay anything at all,” says Youri Mulder, who is on the Supervisory Board of the German first division.
Peter Vandenbempt told Extra Time that he understands that Michael Frey wants to leave The Great Old. “He is a high-scoring striker at Antwerp. When he plays, he scores.”
But in the past 4 months, Frey has only kicked off a competition match twice.
“Frey (28) is getting older. He would like to be more of a basic player, if necessary together with Vincent Janssen.”
“If I were Antwerp, I would do everything I can to keep him,” says Vandenbempt.
If I were Frey, I would leave Antwerp.
“I would leave Antwerp if I were Frey,” laughs Youri Mulder, who is on the Supervisory Board of Schalke 04. The red lantern from the Bundesliga would be interested in Frey.
“I can’t say anything about the day-to-day business, so I can’t say anything about possible interest in Frey.”
Mulder does admit that the first division team does not have a large piggy bank. “Schalke 04 cannot afford anything at all.”
“The club does not have 4 million euros ready like Anderlecht for a Danish player (Anders Dreyer).”
The German tradition club is in debt. “They are busy paying off that mountain of debt. They can just barely pay my salary as a supervisory director.”
