History: for the first time, a referee gave… a white card (video)

It’s been since the 1970 World Cup that yellow and red cards have been introduced in professional football. In more than 50 years, fans have become accustomed to seeing these little colored rectangles penalize players’ faults. But this weekend, the fans present in the Benfica stadium were able to observe a white card.

It was during the Lisbon derby, between the women’s teams of Benfica and Sporting Portugal, that this new card was brandished for the first time.

The white card is designed to show appreciation to clubs for acts of fair play during a match, with the aim”improve the ethical value of sport“.

The referee of the meeting gave this card to the healers of the two teams who united to treat a person in the stands who felt unwell. The white card was widely applauded by the supporters present at the stadium.

For the moment, the carte blanche is only used in Portugal, but it could be introduced in other countries if it manages to appeal to fans and decision-makers alike.
