Hazard was only allowed to play more than 90 minutes once in the current Bundesliga season. In his remaining 13 appearances, the Belgian, who did not score a point this season, was either substituted on or substituted by BVB coach Edin Terzic. The competition in his position was increasingly outstripping the offensive player.

In Dortmund’s three previous games after the World Cup break, Hazard has not been used, and he was completely missing from the squad in the most recent successes in Mainz (2-1) and Leverkusen (2-0). Now the sidelined 29-year-old is leaving BVB and joining PSV Eindhoven, where he is on loan until the end of the season.

Eindhoven is reacting to the departure of youngsters Cody Gakpo and Noni Madueke, who moved to Liverpool and Chelsea respectively in the Premier League. So far, the Red and Whites have only brought back Fabio Silva for the offensive, which means that there is still a need for action in attack. The 47-time Belgian national player now closes the vacuum on the flank.

With Hazard, BVB will lose a lot of Bundesliga experience

“This loan is the best solution for everyone at the moment. During the next five months I can gain match practice at a high level with a club that is very ambitious. I wish my teammates at BVB the best possible success in all three for the second half of the season competitions”, Hazard is quoted as saying in the BVB announcement.

Sporting director Kehl adds: “Thorgan Hazard approached us with the desire to be loaned to a club where he plays regularly. Eindhoven, third in the Eredivisie table, is in the middle of a championship fight and is still in the Europa League represent.”

Hazard joined Dortmund in 2019 from Borussia Mönchengladbach for €25m. Since then he has played 122 games for BVB and scored 18 goals. After a total of eight and a half years in the Bundesliga and 233 games in Germany’s top division, the Belgian is now trying his luck in the Netherlands.
