Handball World Cup: Out against very strong French – you kept up for so long, boys! | Sports

What a fight! What a drama! What a game!

Handball-Titan Germany despairs of France goalkeeper

Germany’s handball players lose the World Cup quarterfinals against France 28:35.

In a gripping game, the record world champion (6 titles) and reigning Olympic champion is unfortunately a bit better.

That was great though, guys!

Germany started the game really well, leading 11:7. Also because every throw is in it. France responded with a time-out – and a run. After stupid ball losses, it was only 11:11 within two minutes. At 16:16 we go on break.

Outstanding: Goalkeeper Andreas Wolff (31), who is very difficult for the French to overcome and makes the game tight for a long time.

Wolff: “I’m a little disappointed. What disappoints me the most is the high result. We started great, but then we despaired of the goalkeeper. In the end we gave up a bit. End up losing by seven. That doesn’t reflect the course of the game. Now we have to finish fifth.”

In the end, the French coldly exploited the simple mistakes made by the Germans.

Unfortunately, the great fight of our handball boys is not rewarded.

National coach Alfred Gislason (63): “After the four-goal lead, we make too many mistakes. From the 35th-40th Minute we didn’t accommodate many chances like that. The French squad is of course very, very broad. I’m very proud of the boys. But you also saw that players who played a lot were very exhausted.”

And further says the Icelander. “I don’t think we gave up at all. On the contrary. We just threw badly. Sometimes we didn’t even look at the goalkeeper, which is a bit puzzling for me.”

This makes it clear: In the parallel game, co-hosts Sweden beat Egypt 26-22. Germany meets Egypt on Friday at 3.30 p.m. (ARD and SPORTBILD ticker).

Captain Johannes Golla after the game: “The result is too high. It was a big fight from us. We didn’t use the free chances in the way you have to use them to get into the semi-finals.”

In the semi-finals, France will play Denmark and Sweden will play Spain.
