Güssing – Tennis: Great double success that came about spontaneously

The club management of the UTC Raika Güssing with chairman Verena Hirmann was incredibly enthusiastic about the performance of their Güssinger “Youngsters” Matthias Ujvary and Benedikt Szerencsits. Above all, the double success of Ujvary, who won an ITF tournament in Antalya with his Bulgarian partner Yanaki Milev, caused a stir.

Szerencsits also got the positive headlines, because he only had to admit defeat to his Hungarian opponent in the final at the ITF youth event in Oberpullendorf.

From singles to doubles victory

The 18-year-old Ujvary actually only wanted to compete in Turkey in the individual competition, but that was the end of the line for him in round one against Davide Galoppini (3:6, 3:6). His roommate in Turkey, Bulgarian Yanaki Milev (18), persuaded him a few days earlier to play doubles at this ITF M15 tournament.

“Matthias immediately said yes before he somehow forgot it,” smiled his coach Herbert Rosenkranz and added: “That’s how he came to the later double victory almost like the virgin to the child.” Postscript: “I’m on his achievement very, very proud.”

Pride is a good keyword, because Benedikt Szerencsits (17) also played well recently. A youth event was on the schedule in Oberpullendorf and the man from Güssing played his best tennis, especially in the first two rounds. He was not able to maintain this level in the further course, but he still made it to the final.

“He probably set himself too high expectations,” explained Rosenkranz, and Chairwoman Hirmann summed it up: “We are incredibly proud of the achievements of our two protégés.”
