Glauners and glaziers win gold and bronze

Youngsters from JC Wermelskirchen competed in Eindhoven at the weekend

What a start to the 2023 competition year for the young judoka of JC Wermelskirchen. At the international Dutch Open in Eindhoven, Netherlands, the athletes made a very positive impression on themselves last weekend and, despite strong competition, ultimately won two medals. pk

At the top of the podium was Hannah Glauner (up to 48 kilograms), who competed in the U15 age group. The woman from Wermelskirchen fought five fights, all of which she got the upper hand. In the final, she managed an early lead against a Dutch woman, which she subsequently brought over time. She had little trouble before in the semifinals. Glauner started the tournament with two quick wins. In her third fight, however, she had to do a tough job. After a ten-minute fight, she had to go into extra time, in which she finally prevailed.

The JCW junior fighter Julius Glaser (-50 kg), who was in action in the U18s, was happy about a bronze medal. After three clear victories, he also made it into the semi-finals. There he met the later tournament winner from Italy. In a fight at eye level, he was narrowly defeated. In the subsequent battle for the medal, Glaser kept his cool and defeated a Belgian opponent.

Phil Cabecana (-42 kg) was also in action in the U15s. After four victories in six fights, he was satisfied with his seventh place in the internationally strong field of participants. After three victories, Cabecana had to admit defeat to eventual finalists Belgium in the quarter-finals. In the consolation round there was a win and a loss.

Also at the start was Carolin Scheida in the U18 lightweight. However, the German champion of the past year did not have a good day and had to accept four defeats in four fights. Or maybe her thoughts were elsewhere. After her performance on Saturday, she was on the plane to Australia on Sunday. Scheida will now spend the next three months in Brisbane.
