Dimitri Van den Bergh became the first Belgian ever to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup darts. A historic achievement of ‘The DreamMaker’, which is now back in the country. And there he was surprised by family and friends on Thursday.
On Wednesday, Van den Bergh returned to Antwerp together with his fiancée Evi and daughter Oonah from England – where they stayed one night in their rental home in Leicester after the lost semi-final on Tuesday -. Next weekend there is a tournament of its own planned, in the Olmens zoo Pakawi Park, but on Thursday ‘The DreamMaker’ was surprised.
He was lured with an excuse to café Den Anne in Merksem. There, his matches were closely followed by his biggest fans, including his father Chris. He was now also there, just like dozens of supporters, to welcome Van den Bergh as a hero. The number 11 in the world knew nothing about it. So he was also very surprised when he arrived with his wife and child, and mama Anita.
“It was a surprise for him”, Anita Lambrechts chuckles. “It was all planned short and quickly after an idea from Seppe, the husband of a niece. Evi and Viani (one of his brothers, ed.) were involved in the plot. Dimitri obviously didn’t know what hit him. He is indeed an emotional person, but that is to his credit.”
