As a result of his separation with Shakira, many details of the relationship have come to light. One of them is that it was thanks to the mother of his two children that Gerard got the contract to bring the Davis Cup to Spain in 2019, since the composer introduced her ex-partner to the directors of the Rakuten Group, which is the company in charge of this tournament.
However, on January 12, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) announced through a statement that it had decided to terminate the contract it had with the Kosmos group.
“The ITF confirms that its agreement with Kosmos Tennis for the Davis Cup ends in its fifth year,” the statement read. “It has been ensured that financial contingencies are covered and, as custodians of the competition, we will organize the 2023 edition qualifiers and finals as planned, with the eight-team finals taking place in Malaga, Spain, in the month of November”.
Although everything seemed in order and that things had ended on good terms, yesterday (January 23), the newspaper Sport reported that the ITF wants to sue Kosmos for damages for canceling the Davis Cup, and they are very sure they will win.
“The International Tennis Federation (…) is studying the legal measures against Gerard Piqué and his company for the accumulated debts and for damages for the bad image that the end of said agreement transmits,” the newspaper published.
In theory, the agreement was for 25 years, but after the negotiations to reduce the fee of 40 million euros failed, which is what each edition costs, Piqué with his company Kosmo decided to leave things there and end the agreement. But the other side does not want to lose money, that is why they seek to sue the former soccer player, so that he liquidates all the money from the 21 years that were not fulfilled.
