Since his strong World Cup with Croatia, Josko Gvardiol has been a constant topic when it comes to transfers. He doesn’t rule out such a thing in the summer, but before that he has big plans with RB.

Josko Gvardiol believes RB Leipzig have a chance of winning the German championship this season. The Croatian international soccer player compared the possibilities of the third-placed player with the performance of the Croatians at the World Cup in Qatar.

“If a country as small as Croatia can come third in the World Cup, why not RB German champions? Our tournament showed that anything is possible in football,” said the 20-year-old professional from the Saxon Bundesliga club at the training camp in Abu Dhabi.

Gvardiol had arrived at the hotel the night before and been greeted with applause for his World Cup success by his team-mates, whom he described as his “second family”. The centre-back had played a high profile tournament which has sparked speculation about his possible exit in the summer. The defender recently fueled this himself when he said in a Croatian TV interview that he wanted to talk to RB about a possible sale after the end of the season. Gvardiol still has a contract until June 30, 2027.

In Abu Dhabi he now rowed back. With reference to statements by sports director Max Eberl, who insists on staying in the coming season, Gvardiol said: “My plan is to stay with RB in the summer. You heard that from our sports director.” He added that it was “okay” with him, but left a back door open: “I think we need to talk.”

Gvardiol was given a week’s special leave because of Croatia’s World Cup success and missed the first days of the training camp in Abu Dhabi. He was also not there for the 4-2 (2-1) friendly defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.
