Before the start of the World Cup: handball player Patrick Groetzki in an interview with SZ – Sport

Patrick Groetzki was almost out of the national team, now at the age of 33 he is going to the World Cup. He talks about the time when he wasn’t nominated, how much routine is worth in critical situations – and explains why age doesn’t have to be a disadvantage for outside players.

The World Cup in Poland and Sweden begins for the German national handball team on Friday – and Patrick Groetzki is already entering his tenth major tournament. His numbers are quite impressive: 158 caps, 382 goals, no one in the current squad has more experience than the 33-year-old left-hander. It was not foreseeable that with his seventh participation he would become the record German player at the World Cup. Because Groetzki was out, was no longer nominated after the 2021 World Cup, others in his right-wing position were younger and better.
