Básquet Girona opens a gap with relegation with a decisive victory against Fuenlabrada (75-83)

2023 has started in the best possible way for Básquet Girona, which escapes the relegation places with a victory in Fuenlabrada in a match that it has almost always had control. The main architect of the victory was Quino Colom, who finished the match with 25 points and a spectacular 6/8 in triples. Andorra has been well supported by Fjellerup and Miletic, who have added 13 and 12 points respectively. Aíto’s men now have 5 wins and will be able to face the next game against Bilbao in Fontajau with more peace of mind.

The game started with uncertainty and two very thick teams in attack. However, the first advantages have been for Básquet Girona, thanks to the success of Colom from beyond 6.75 and the efficiency of Miletic under the hoops. For its part, Fuenlabrada lived off Hannah’s baskets (8-12). But the initiative belonged to those of Aíto, who continued to score comfortably near the basket, now with the talent of Fjellerup, and a new three-pointer by Colom on the horn of the first quarter gave them a maximum advantage of 9 points (12-21 ).

The second quarter started with a basket by Senglin, but in Girona the most outstanding were the first points of the new signing Jeremiah Hill. It seemed that Fotajau’s team had the game under control, but the Madrid team started to close the gap thanks to the duo formed by Senglin and Hannah (22-26). The game entered a phase now with more scoring and Fuenlabrada, guided by the pair of Americans, was increasingly comfortable in attack, but Girona’s success from the perimeter and the contribution of Fjellerup and Prkacin were key to go to the break with a small advantage (35-40).

The second half did not start well for the interests of Básquet Girona, overcome by a greater intensity of Fuenlabrada. Aíto’s lost two consecutive balls that the Madrid team took advantage of to turn the score around (48-46). When things were worse for Girona, Vila appeared, with five consecutive points, and then Taylor to give the team some air again (48-54). The local coach tried to make his players react with a timeout, but it was of no use because a Colomb in a state of grace scored triples in any form and allowed Básquet Girona to escape by more than 10 points. The Andorran point guard was accompanied by another stellar Fjellerup, and at the end of the third quarter victory seemed close (56-68).

It was time to maintain concentration and not give any option, no matter how small, to the rival. And it seemed that it would be so, because the difference reached 16 points with a free throw by Fjellerup. In addition, the local fans, nervous seeing that their players did not react, dedicated a whistle to them. But the Madrid players, boosted by Caroline and Hannah, and taking advantage of a small disconnect from Girona, were only 6 points behind (69-75). Fortunately, Aíto’s team kept calm, and thanks again to Colom, who scored a triple with a hair of luck stinging the board, they practically put the verdict (71-82) two minutes from the end. Fuenlabrada kept trying but the Girona team had enough not to lose balls and let the seconds pass to certify the second victory in two games this beginning of the year.
