Australian Open 2023: Novak Djokovic breaks Andre Agassi’s record in Melbourne

For Novak Djokovic it should be more of a marginal aspect, but it is an important number for tennis statistics: 27 wins in a row at the Australian Open mean a new record at Melbourne Park.

Djokovic had previously shared the best value with Andre Agassi – even twice. The Belgrade had already won 26 games in a row between 2011 and 2014.

Now it has surpassed its mark. From 2019 to 2021 he won the Australian Open three times in a row, in 2022 he had to take a forced break after being expelled. Djokovic’s last defeat to date in Melbourne was on January 22, 2018, when he lost to South Korea’s Chung Hyeon in the round of 16.

Borg’s Wimbledon run tops everything

Compared to the records in the other three Grand Slam competitions, Djokovic still has room for improvement. Rafael Nadal won a whopping 39 matches in a row at the French Open between 2010 and 2015, Roger Federer was victorious 40 times at the US Open (2004 to 2009) and Björn Borg even achieved 41 successes at Wimbledon (1976 to 1981).

The only record that counts for Djokovic right now is the Grand Slam title record. If the 35-year-old wins the final against Stefanos Tsitsipas on Sunday, he draws level with Rafael Nadal.
