Australian Major League Baseball star Liam Hendriks has been diagnosed with cancer

Australian athlete Liam Hendriks, who plays in Major League Baseball for the Chicago White Sox, will begin treatment immediately after being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Hendriks announced on Instagram that he had been diagnosed in recent days.

The Perth-born three-time All-Star is set to begin AEDT treatment on Tuesday.

“Hearing the word ‘cancer’ was a shock to my wife and I, as it is to millions of families each year,” Hendriks wrote on Instagram.

“However, I am resolved to embrace the fight and overcome this new challenge with the same determination that I have used in the face of other obstacles in my life.”

Hendriks said he was “confident” he would “make a full recovery and be back on the mound as soon as possible”.

“I know that with the support of my wife, my family, my teammates and the Chicago White Sox organization, along with the treatment and care of my doctors, I will get through this.” he writes.

Hendriks made his third all-star team last season after 37 saves.

He led the American League with a career-high 38 saves in 2021, after leaving Oakland Athletics to sign a three-year, $78 million contract with the White Sox.

Hendriks has 115 saves and a 3.81 ERA in 12 seasons with the Minnesota Twins, Toronto Blue Jays, Kansas City Royals, Oakland and Chicago.
