ATP > John McEnroe: “Nadal is the greatest example of all time. When you watch him play, you say to yourself: ‘How can this guy still want to win everything? It looks like he has never won a Grand Slam'”

Passing over the antennaeEurosport in order to evoke the 2023 edition of the Australian Open which is fast approaching (from January 16 to 29), John McEnroe wanted to insist on the incredible will of Rafael Nadal even though he has everything nearly won. For the American, the Spaniard is the best example for a child or a novice.

“The greatest quality an athlete can have is hunger. No matter how successful you are, you have to be willing to put in the effort and hard work to give yourself a chance, and Rafa does that better than anyone. He keeps both his humility and his arrogance, which is not always easy to manage, and he manages it very well. He manages to make every game feel like he has to respect his opponent and he has to give 100%. Very few players can do that, it’s an amazing quality and that’s why he won so much. With him, you believe he will do anything and everything to come back and give himself that chance, and there are very few players you can say that about, which is why there is so much respect for Rafa. When you watch Nadal play, you’re like, ‘God, how can this guy still want to win it all? Looks like he never won a Grand Slam. It looks like every point he plays is the last he will play. I try to teach this to my kids at my academy every day: if you go out and do this, good things will happen, and he’s the best example ever. »
